Place: Cote de Brouilly, Beaujolais – France
Jean-Claude Lapalu is one of France's most renowned vignerons and a darling of the Paris natural wine scene. He farms old vines (50-100-years-old) meticulously and organically, the resulting wines are unadulterated, energetic and idiosyncratic.
His Cote de Brouilly comes from 50-year-old vines planted to clay, granite and, strikingly, blue stone soils. It is both supple and concentrated at once, gamey and wild—in the best way—with a long, piquant finish. Bottled without fining, filtering or sulphur.
