Some people seem to be in all the right places at all the right times. Winemaker Matt Large is one of those people. He has worked at Shadowfax, Shaw + Smith, Tolpuddle and stalwart Barolo producer, Luigi Oddero. The last of which is where his passion for nebbiolo and it’s Australian potential were realised.
The Spring White is a field blend of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Savagnin from the Magpie Block in Southern Fleurieu — an east–northeast slope of sandy loam and quartz over limestone. Chardonnay is fermented in amphora, while Savagnin and Pinot Blanc rest in seasoned French oak. Four months on lees before blending delivers a wine that is fresh, mineral and immediate, with both texture and brightness.
