2019 Karim Vionnet 'Chiroubles' VV
Place: Chiroubles - Beaujolais, France
Variety: Gamay
Farming: Organic
Born to Algerian parents, Karim was adopted as a child by the Vionnets in Morgon. He has worked with the region’s greats—Lapierre, Breton, Foillard—as a vineyard- and cellar-hand, as well as assistant winemaker. He alongside his daughter Noemie now farm 5ha across Beaujolais-Villages, Chiroubles, Chenas and Fleurie.
His Chiroubles ‘Vieilles Vignes’ comes from 40–60-year-old vines, fermented in concrete and raised in old oak, giving a little extra depth to this naturally lifted cru. The 2019 is perfumed and beautifully expressive. Violet, peony and red cherry lead, with a gentle earthy undertone. The palate is light on its feet but finely structured, with silky tannins, bright acidity and a soft mineral edge. Elegant, floral and quietly complex—Chiroubles at its most charming.
