2019 Terraquilla 'Il Nativo Ancestrale' Emilia-Romagna, Italy
The story of TerraQuilia began in 2004, but evolved rapidly with the swift success of their traditional sparklings refermented in bottle. These unadulterated, energetic wines garnered an overwhelmingly and surprisingly positive response from their customers, allowing the estate to pivot toward more substantial output.
This is a blend of two zippy-fresh white grapes, pignoletto and trebbiano romagnolo, fermented in stainless steel after a short, cold maceration then bottled still fermenting. It's disgorged after twenty months, producing a filigreed fizz that punches way above it's price. Comparable to good Burgundy or Loire Cremant.
NV Clos Maurice 'Volupte' Crémant de Loire Loire Valley, France
Whilst the Hardouin family has been present in Varrains since 1783 and Mickael Hardouin has been making very good wines since 2007 from their exceptionally placed vineyards, the story of Clos Maurice as we now know it is a very new one.
This Cremant is fermented in old, large French oak then aged for eight months in the same vessel, followed by 15 months in bottle before release. No dosage or sulphur is added, resulting in a dry, racy and elegant fizz that is a great way to begin or end a meal.
2015 La Mesma Metodo Classico Piedmont, Italy
La Mesma is the rising star of the Gavi and is both owned and operated by the Rosina sisters, Paola, Francesca and Anna.
Their Metodo Classico is wonderfully fresh and pleasantly substantial. Fresh and dried citrus and white flowers abound, closing with a moreish amaretto bitterness. A great sparkling that shines as an aperitif.
