Three wines that are light, pretty and ooze an easygoing nature that makes them approachable in any setting.
2021 Karim Vionnet 'Cuvee KV' Beaujolais Villages Beaujolais, FRA
Born to Algerian parents, Karim was adopted as a child by the Vionnets in Morgon. He has worked with the region’s greats—Lapierre, Breton, Foillard—as a vineyard- and cellar-hand, as well as assistant winemaker. He now farms small farms in Chiroubles, Chenas and Fleurie. From two parcels around Morgon, in the villages of Lancié and Beaujeu, this is Beaujolais Villages at its juicy, feel-good best. Bursting with red and dark fruits, it’s bright, vibrant and seriously easy to love — the kind of wine that disappears quickly once the bottle’s open.
2024 Bruno Lafon ‘Collette’ Pinot Noir Languedoc, France
From the same Bruno Lafon that makes some of Burgundy’s most revered wines from Domaine Comtes Lafon in Meursault comes an eminently guzzleable and perfect midweek pinot. We can’t all afford the starting prices of his $250/bottle Meursault, but we can enjoy his approachable and expressive pinot from the Languedoc. It’s all raspberry coulis brightness with a smattering of dusty tannins. It takes us straight to the south of France.
2024 Whip Wines 'Red' Merlot Barossa Valley, SA
Whip Wines is the rebranding of Aaron Fenwick’s Château Comme Ci, Comme Ça label. He’s leaning into Americana aesthetically but the wines are just delicious, unfussed expressions of their plot and grape. 100% Merlot from Vine Vale in the Barossa Valley. While his 'MerLove' is all freshness and drinking from the fridge, this red is darker, more savoury, whilst retaining plush, bright fruit. A lovely winter red.
