2018 Sven Joschke Off Piste ‘La Pète Sa Mère’ Arbois Chardonnay
Region: Arbois - Jura, FRA
During his time working in South Australia, Sven Joschke struck up a friendship with young Jura vigneron, Marin Fumey, of Fumey Chatelain.
Marin was gethering experience working at Barossa new wave icon, Spinifex, and spent a little time helping out Sven. Sven returned the favour with vintage in the Jura. Whilst there, he procured a little Chardonnay which he put to barrel in 2018. The wine has spent two years in bottle before release. It's a ripper.
Strong reductive, wet slate and stone scents to start but that gives way to light honey notes, salted nuts, stone fruit and green melon. The palate is tense and taut, lightly honeyed too, gently saline-minerally and finds a little squirt of apricot nectar in there too, finishing with light walnut paste notes. Very pent up in feel, dry and puckering in texture, though give the wine some air and it starts to soften somewhat and bring you in as a drinker. A wine for cellaring to start, I reckon, though don’t be shy to have a crack now; too hard to resist seeing what Sven has been up to. Notes from Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
