Pinot Noir is our favourite variety, no secret there... Here are a few that are currently receiving high rotation in our glasses.
2020 William Downie 'Bull Swamp' Pinot Noir Gippsland, VIC
Dense, alluring black fruits with something smoky behind the veil. Plum compote and fresh violets. Firm tannin kept lively by zippy acidity. Like being swaddled in velvet and it tastes wonderful as it sounds. More serious, if you will. One to take some time with.
2020 Mac Forbes 'Villages Gladysdale' Pinot Noir Yarra Valley, VIC
Mac Forbes has spent years championing sub regions of the Yarra Valley. His new ‘Villages’ range is about exploring these unique sites. Gladysdale is not as well-known as some other Yarra sub-regions such as Woori Yallock or Coldstream but he bought a vineyard there in 2017 and it quickly became a favourite site. This is more on the aromatic, herbal, spicy side with a slightly darker fruit profile.
2019 First Foot Forward Pinot Noir Yarra Valley, VIC
One of the best Pinots we've seen this year! The fruit comes from two different sites in the Yarra: one parcel from the volcanic soil of the Upper Yarra and the other from the rocky soil of Lilydale on the valley floor. Generous yet vibrant with savoury edges for interest. The kind of Pinot we love to drink in warmer months.
2020 Mulline 'Sutherlands Creek' Pinot Noir Geelong, VIC
This is an incredibly impressive Victorian Pinot Noir that carries the haunting traits of a winemaker who has worked at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy. We hate the term ‘Burgundian’ at DITC, but by jeez, we can’t find a better word at this point in time… Alluring spice, forest floor aromatics, seamless tannin, and a haunting 4th dimension. We could easily be at a great address on the Cote d’Or. Engaging and sophisticated Pinot Noir worth pondering.
2021 Stoney Rise 'No Clothes' Pinot Noir Tamar Valley, TAS
This wine goes from strength to strength each year. There are red fruits with touches of cinnamon and herb. The palate is taut and structured but juicy enough to make you want to drink it. The wine finishes with power and length, and is long with a refreshing acidity.
2020 Joshua Cooper 'Doug's Vineyard' Pinot Noir Macedon Range, VIC
As usual for Doug’s Vineyard this vintage is intensely aromatic, full of wilted rose petal, sour red cherry, porcini and clean turned earth, with a seasoning of exotic spice. The small crop lends intense concentration, yet compared to the the last two vintages it is much more weightless and acid driven, finishing with a trail of fine powdery tannin and exceptional balance.
