The most important grape in Italy's north-western Piedmont region, Nebbiolo is the King/Queen of grapes and the grape for Kings and Queens. Known for its signature perfume of tar, roses, violets and vibrant fruits that are always wrapped in trademark tannin, it is where every wine lover will find an otherworldly experience. This is especially true in the regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, but we are just as excited these days by the Alpine freshness of Alto-Piemonte and, of course, the emerging wonder of Australian Nebbiolo.
2022 Caves de Donnas ‘Barmet’ Nebbiolo Valle D’Aoste, Italy
In 1971, a group of winemakers, after obtaining the DOC for wine from Donnas, formed a cooperative with the specific aim of protecting and guaranteeing the quality and authenticity of the wine. Today they produce unique and curious expressions of Nebbiolo from very high altitude vineyards, with these vineyards sitting between 800–1200masl—the highest in Europe! Alpine herbs and mountain freshness in a frame of light colour and structure.
2022 Olek Bondonio ‘White Label’ Langhe Nebbiolo Piedmont, Italy
Olek Bondonio has become one of the most sought-after names in Barbaresco. He is lucky enough to work with some of the very best sites in Piedmont and does everything he can to make sure each wine speaks of this wonderful place. Nebbiolo from a tiny, 25-year-old located in the Langhe region. Fermentation lasts around 20 days in stainless steel, followed by aging in cement. Part of this production was blended with Nebbiolo from Altavilla for the classic black-labeled Langhe Nebbiolo. The remaining portion was bottled with this new label, offering a plush, drink now style.
2022 Alessandro Salvano ‘DWNL’ Nebbiolo Piedmont, Italy
Alessandro was born into the vinous world with both of his grandparents being winemakers. In 2019 Alessandro begun making his own wine, purchasing some fruit from his uncle’s vineyard in Montelupo Albese, an unprestigious ‘outside-the-Barolo-zone’ region to the east of Serralunga, inspiring the 'Drink Wine, Not Labels' mantra. Freshness, vivacity and exuberant energy define the wines and being only the third vintage, the future is incredibly bright here.100% whole bunch nebbiolo. In the mouth it's fine-boned and filigreed, but not without hallmark nebbiolo tannin, albeit approachable in its youth.
