Dane and wife Hannah started Momento Mori with the intention to craft wines that, before anything else, respect the living. Hence the name, as memento (spelt with an e) mori is an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept being rooted in the philosophers of classical antiquity. Thanks, philosophy. The wines, thankfully, are vivacious and vigourous. They farm organically and all that can be done by hand is. Small ferments, wild yeasts, no fining, filtering or additions at any stage. The fruit, therefore, can speak its piece, unadulterated, naked as it came.
‘Staring at the Sun is what you might call our flagship wine (for want of a better term), it was the first wine released under Momento Mori and has gained somewhat of a cult following in Australia and abroad. I started making wine on a quest to make wines precisely like this one. And subsequently to keep trying to hone and refine them year in and year out no matter what the cost or how inefficient the methods are deemed to be. The 2020 rendition of this cuvee is along the same lines as the 2018. Medium bodied with great texture. It is pure, clean and has great tension and energy without lacking any of its usual character or charm.’ - note from the winemaker, Dane
