Brendon and Kirsty Keys run one of the all time winemaking outfits of Australia from their castle perched atop of a rocky outcrop in the Adelaide Hill's Basket Range. The winery is a hub of creativity, passion, fun and oenological wonder. The wines get better with every vintage as relationships with growers endure, lessons learnt from the North return home and winemaking shows ever increasing restraint.
This Spring release is a collection of boundary pushing, imaginative and highly delicious expressions of the Adelaide Hills.
2021 BK Carbonic Chardonnay – Basket Range
The first Carbonic Chardonnay since 2017! Not for want of love but for the reality of several years of smaller vintages than what was just experienced in 2017. This is chardonnay designed to be enjoyed fresh and young. It sees the full carbonic maceration treatment as it’s name would suggest and some mild skin contact. It is a short story about white peach and white flowers, that ends with a crisp apple candy full stop. It was fermented in concrete for 10 days before being pressed to stainless steel. A park wine if I’ve ever seen one.
2 x 2021 BK Chardonnay Pet Nat – Basket Range
It. Is. Back. The highly anticipated annual release of Brendan Key’s Pet-Nat is upon us and oh boy what a treat it is. This is the best incarnation of this wine we have seen. As usual it is 100% Basket Range Chardonnay, whole bunch pressed to a concrete ‘egg’ fermenter where it ferments until just nearly dry before being transferred to bottle. Stunning fruit purity and clarity in this release, full of citrus, tropical fruit and freshness of frame. So so moreish too. Spring has sprung!
2 x 2021 Bk Pinot Noir Pet Nat – Lenswood
A lava lamp of lees and solids visually, the nose of this wine is unmistakably Pinot Noir, smelling like just ripe raspberries and cherry goodness. This continues in the mouth with red berry waves to surf across the tongue and a fresh sea spray finish that screams spring drinking. The fruit is all from the sub-region of Lenswood, and like it’s chardonnay counterpart, is whole bunch pressed to a concrete egg before being bottled just before fermentation is complete.
2021 BK Carbonic Pinot Noir - Lenswood
This is a unique wine in the BK winery as it sees 3 weeks in a very old antique large wooden cuvee under full carbonic maceration (as the name suggests). This is a concentrated and sense expression of pinot noir that could easily be mistaken for light syrah. It has cherry driven fruit purity and a moreish juiciness that keeps your arm reaching for another glass.
