A collection of whites from Aussie producers we love—from light and ethereal Pinot Noir through to dark, spice-laden Syrah, there's something from everyone.
2019 Deranged 'Mansion on the Hill' Shiraz Geelong, VIC
To learn more about the process of winemaking, five cousins got together to produce their own Shiraz. The fruit comes from an organically farmed and dry grown site near the township of Bannockburn, which was planted in 1974 by their grandfather. Everything is gentle in the process of making this wine and the result is a layered, distinctly cool climate Shiraz.
2021 Worlds Apart 'Blewitt Springs' Grenache McLaren Vale, SA
After more than a decade working in fine wine retail and the world’s best restaurants, Louis Schofield created Worlds Apart Wines in 2017 with a simple goal: to make wine thoughtfully that was also delicious. Having trained under the late, great Tara Ochota, these wines are getting better and better each year. The fifth vintage of this light, but structured grenache, from old vines grown in sand. Delicious autumn drinking red.
2021 BK Wines 'Pur Jus' Pinot Noir Adelaide Hills, Sa
Once upon a time there was a Cabernet Franc vineyard deep within a rocky, riverbed wrinkle in Basket Range. One year out of three, the fruit there would ripen. So in a burst of inspiration, Pinot Noir was grafted onto these Cabernet Franc roots in the hope that the shift to a cooler-ripening variety would ensure that fewer harvests ended in tears. And it worked! Mostly. About 10% of the grafts didn’t take and the upshot is that we have our own little pocket of the Loire Valley in our backyard with a mélange of Pinot Noir and Cab Franc. Crispy and fresh, just-ripe cherries with a green tea edge courtesy of the Franc. We could not be happier to have our toes in this lovely little pocket of terroir.
2021 Stoney Rise Trousseau Tamar Valley, TAS
Exciting stuff right here, Trousseau from Tassie. Young vines, about seven years old, estate fruit, aged in clay amphora pots. There is plenty of Turkish Delight going on here, with some stewed raspberries on the palate. Fresh and juicy.
2019 Ephemera Syrah Yarra Valley, VIC
Syrah from the organic home block in the Yarra that Rhen and Janelle at Ephemera having been farming for the last seven years, Chum Creek. Brisk but substantial. Black fruits and white pepper in a supple package. The lighter side of the moon. A light chill keeps it crunchy throughout.
2021 Trutta Cabernet Franc Harcourt Valley, VIC
Biodynamically farmed Cabernet Franc from the great Bress vineyard in central Vic. An energetic wine that jumps from the glass, awash with acid-filled character. Jake is an avid fly fisherman, and that has reminded us that this would be excellent with trout rillettes spread onto crusty sourdough.
