Place: Piccadilly Valley — Adelaide Hills, SA
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese
After studying oenology, winemaker Michael Downer undertook vintages in the Adelaide Hills, Great Western and Barolo, eventually settling in the Adelaide Hills where he is now at the helm of Murdoch Hill.
His red blend is predominantly cabernet sauvignon with the balance made up by merlot and sangiovese. It’s not your typical young cabernet in that it is immensely approachable and not abounding in harsh tannin. It’s best enjoyed with hearty fare, but a glass while cooking tells a tale of freshness, not heaviness.
