Place: Chalmer's Vineyard - Heathcote, VIC
Variety: Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso
Notes from the winemaker, Pat:
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso - or the good Refosco as I like to call it. A Friulian native. Just three rows at Chalmers in the southeast corner of the property on own roots in the ultra red Colbo soils. 2020 is such a lovely red wine vintage - beautiful, powerful wine with light palate weights. So nice.
A decant is wise here. Incredibly dense colour in the glass, deepest of plum reds in the core, through beetroot purple to a cherry rim. There’s a wonderful amount of elevated aromatics, lots of alpine herb, cherry blossoms, sappy pine meets oiled hardwood, and ripe plums. It’s hedonistic but not overly rustic or grossly rich to smell.
The palate is complex and large while remaining tight. Soft, velvety, purple curtains and opened via a bright alpine sappy bitterness. It separates the dark fruits and rolls long through the palate. Genepi, pine needle, thyme down the middle - muddled plums and fresh blackberries either side. Texture of silky fruit folds into bitter, grippy amaro that is so refreshing. Screams for some fat and spice on your plate.
