Place: Saint-Bris — Burgundy, France
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Farming: Biodynamic
Saint-Bris is an anomaly on the French wine landscape. We are taught that all white wine from Burgundy must be either Chardonnay or Aligote, right? True, unless the grapes are grown in this north-eastern outpost of Burgundy where the grape grown is in fact Sauvignon Blanc.
This came about due to the collapse of the local industry in the early 1900s due to phylloxera and the relative success Sauvignon Blanc had in plantings further West in the Loire. Goisot is the benchmark producer of the region, farming biodynamically and producing crystalline wines of purity that are intensely mineral and powerful.
