Place: Valtellina — Lombardy, Italy
Variety: Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo)
Farming: Organic
Barbacan was founded by Angelo Sega and his sons Matteo and Luca in 2006. They farm 7ha of vines in Lombardy, showcasing nebbiolo (chiavennasca) and other regional varieties. They take their role as representatives of the region seriously, seeing their wines as the vanguard of Valgella, one of the five sub-zones of Valtellina.
This is their entry-level rosso that comprises very much not entry-level fruit. It’s red-fruited, delicate and distinctly alpine. Tannins are firm and plenty, of course, so protein is beneficial, but not necessary.
