Wantirna Estate is not far from the centre of Melbourne and was planted in 1963. The impetus for the vineyard began back in 1956 when Reg Egan married Bertina Curcio whose father was Italian. Wine and food were important in the Curcio household and so started a fascination with the history of wine in Victoria. Before long they had their minds on a vineyard somewhere in the Yarra Valley. Eventually they found a site and began there pursuit of producing elegant wines. Each cuvée is named after the granddaughters of Reg and Bertina with illustrations depicting each's personality by renowned Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig.
Extraordinary wine here. Blackberry, raspberry, potpourri and violet perfume, a liquorice pastille richness, and pencilly spicy cedar oak, and in 2019, it seems the oak has been lapped up by the intensity of the fruit. Medium-bodied, rich and full of dark berries, and some red ones peeping through, dark tobacco, toasty spicy oak in support, layers of firm graphite tannin, and a very long savoury, yet perfumed finish. Magnificent. – Notes from The Wine Front
