Place: Central Otago, New Zealand
Variety: Pinot Noir
Chicago wine importer Marquis Savage fell in love with Central Otago on what was meant to be a quick tour of the region. Falling in love meant purchasing 24 hectares in the Cromwell basin. Born-and-bred Central Otago talent Claire Mullholland, formerly of Martinborough Vineyards and Amisfield, takes charge of the winemaking, realising the bright, lively, profound potential of these vineyards year in, year out.
Rarely is a Pinot Noir from Central Otago so supple, delicious and easy to drink as this little number. Cherry and squishy berries, dried herb and plenty of spice, a little fresh mint and rose perfume. Tannin is fleshy and plentiful, yet soft and gently mouth-coating. Finish is all spice and strawberry with a subtle meaty character, leaving emery board tannin in its wake. Love it. Great drinking now. Notes from Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
