Region: Toro, ESP
Variety: Tempranillo, Garnacha
Named in honour of a local folklore hero who brought two warring towns together in a time of famine - Tio Uco is from a mixture of rented vineyards that Alvar farms in the upper sandy areas and the lower lying vineyards he inherited. It's mostly Tinto de Toro, the local, thick skinned Tempranillo clone but there's about 10% of old vine Garnacha (Grenache) that finds its way into the blend, helping to add floral aromatics and an extra lick of natural acidity. Tio Uco is Alvar's everyday, corner-Tapas bar Toro, full of fresh berries, crunchy fruit and singing acid.
